The C6 ZR1 also boasts a full aluminium body with panels made out of carbon fibre coated with a special paint treatment to increase the durability of the carbon fibre to the sun. This helps in keeping the C6 ZR1 both weighed down for aerodynamics and light enough to cut corners and move sleekly around. To achieve its target for being a luxurious sports car, the C6 ZR1 must excel in the following criteria; its power, handling and design.
The Engine (power)
The C6 ZR1 is beyond its predecessors in the fact that it is using a LS9 engine rather than a LS3 engine that is usually used in a ZR1 model. The supercharger placed in the engine has a 4 lobe system which gives it an advantage over the previous 3 lobes model. To avoid any changes in the design, the supercharger’s lobes had to be divided into two halves and each equipped with intercoolers. The LS9 is actually a modified version of the LS3 and is better than the LS7 engine, mainly because it uses the original LS3 engine block for its thickness and piston size. Together with the unique fuel injection system and the clutch and transmission system, the C6 ZR1 does not need most of the gadgets required by the other ZR1 series such as the six bolt transmission and the MM6 gear set.
The Wheels (handling)
When Spiderman’s uncle Ben gave the ever popular quote; “with great power comes great responsibility”, he was not joking. When it comes to cars meant for speed and power, there is a great responsibility in keeping it in great handling capacities and performance. This is where the wheels come in. The C6 ZR1 boasts a set of 20 inch light weight Michelin PS2 tires for the rear and a set of 19 inch light weight Michelin PS2 tires for the front. This is a difference from previous models as the rear tires are slightly larger than the front tires to provide a wind draft that gives pressure to maintain the aerodynamics on the car during high speed rides. This is then complimented on the installation of the Magnetic Selective Ride Control (MSRC) which shifts the weight on the car to further help increase the traction.
The Body (design)
The body of the C6 ZR1 is worthy to be awed at. With stunning cuts and high-end materials, the C6 ZR1 is indeed a model to be viewed. With most of its parts made using aluminium, the C6 ZR1 is definitely a light weight car. To add on more to this, carbon fibre parts such as the fenders and the rocker extensions are added on to reduce the overall weight. These parts are given special paint treatment to increase its durability in the sun. The C6 ZR1 also has the blue badge, engine valve covers and brake callipers to add to the distinctive markings unique to the ZR1 series. Another additional final touch is the polycarbonate window that allows the viewing of the intercooling system of the engine.
